Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman Team India: The final of the World Cup 2023 was played between India and Australia on 19 November. This was the last match of Rahul Dravid as the coach of Team India. In November 2021, he joined Team India on a 2-year contract. According to reports, he does not want to extend his coaching contract.
Team India will get a new coach on the South Africa tour. Dravid will be replaced by someone else, his fellow player and National Cricket Academy (NCA) President VVS Laxman. According to the report in Times of India, he has also met the officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
VVS Laxman has played the role of coach
Currently, Laxman is with the Indian team playing a 5-match T20 series against Australia as a coach. Even when he was Rahul Dravid’s coach, he has played this role many times. Recently he went with the team on the Ireland tour. Last year, after the T20 World Cup, he was also the coach during the white ball series on the New Zealand tour.
Laxman will be a full-time coach
Quoting a BCCI source, the Times of India said, “Laxman has shown interest in this job. During the World Cup, Laxman had gone to Ahmedabad to meet top BCCI officials in this regard. He can sign a contract as the coach of Team India for a long time. He will go on South Africa tour as a coach. This will be his first tour as a full-time coach.”
Dravid has no problem in becoming NCA Chief
The Times of India also reported, “Dravid has informed the BCCI that he is not interested in continuing as coach. He has toured with the Indian team as a player for almost 20 years. He did this as a coach in the last few years. Now he doesn’t want to do this. He has no qualms about taking up the role of NCA chief, which allows him to stay in his hometown Bengaluru. He has been NCA Chief before also. He has no problem in occasionally working as a coach like Laxman.
