In the World Test Championship final against Australia, Shubman Gill has been fined 15% of his match fee for criticizing the decision of the TV umpire. Additionally, India has been fined the full match fee for the slow over rate, while Australia has been fined 80% for the same reason.
On the fourth day, India was chasing Australia’s total of 444 runs. When Gill was batting at 18, Cameron Green took a spectacular catch diving to his left. However, Gill was dissatisfied with the catch and sought the assistance of the third umpire. Subsequently, TV umpire Richard Kettleborough reviewed the catch from various angles and gave the decision against Gill.
Afterwards, Gill took to social media and tweeted a screenshot of the zoomed-in front-on image of Green taking the catch. He also posted about it on Instagram.
ICC has accused him of breaching Article 2.7, which relates to “public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match.” Gill has accepted the charge, so no formal hearing was necessary.
Regarding the slow over rate, India was five overs behind their designated target, while Australia was four overs behind.
After the match, Indian captain Rohit Sharma also expressed disappointment with the process followed in giving Gill out.
He said, “I was quite disappointed. I mean, the third umpire should have seen a bit more and watched the replay. You know how the catch was taken. I think he might have seen it three or four times. It’s not about whether it was out or not, you need to have a proper and clear understanding of anything.”
