IPL 2024 Auction: The mini-auction has been completed ahead of next year’s season of the Indian Premier League, the world’s largest cricket T20 league. For the 17th season of this Grand T20 League, the teams got a chance to fill their vacant slots, In the mini-auction held on December 19 in Dubai, there were many players to whom crores of rupees were paid, some players could not find any buyer and after the auction, all the teams were ready.
10 franchises entered this auction to fill their required 77 slots. After hours of struggle, all the teams finally bought 72 players by spending a total of Rs 230 crore. Some teams got players according to their plans but the strategy of some teams was surprising. Chennai Super Kings – 9/10
This team of 5-time champion Mahendra Singh Dhoni already has very good players. In this auction, the Chennai Super Kings franchise chose the players very cleverly. They got players like Rachin Ravindra and Shardul Thakur for less than 6 crores. So, keeping in mind the future, he gave Rs 8.4 crore to a dangerous hitter like Sameer Rizvi. Whereas New Zealand star Darryl Mitchell was selected for Rs 14 crores. They chose each as a selection option.
Rachin would be a good choice in place of Rayudu at number 3, So, Darryl Mitchell can play at number 4. With the arrival of Mustafizur Rahman along with Shardul, Thakur will provide depth in batting in lower-order and Mustafizur will be there for variety in bowling. It would not be wrong to give Chennai 9 out of 10 marks in the auction.
Delhi Capitals – 6/10
The Delhi Capitals team, which has not been able to win the title even once in the IPL, is going to be much stronger this time with the return of Rishabh Pant. Apart from this, they played some better bets in the auction. They bought a batsman like Harry Brook for only 4 crores. Delhi bought a maximum of 10 players. Apart from Brook, Tristan Stubbs was bought for Rs 50 lakh and Shai Hope for Rs 75 lakh. Preferring Hope over Philip Salt is a surprising decision.
They brought Jhay Richardson to his side for fast bowling by paying Rs 5 crore. It is also a bad idea as they already have Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, and many young Indian pacers. Then there was a surprise by buying an uncapped player like Kumar Kushagra for Rs 7.2 crore. But these players can also be a part of the plan. Apart from this, they completed their squad with younger players and can give them 6 out of 10.

Gujarat Titans – 7/10
Gujarat Titans, the 2022 IPL champion and last season’s runner-up, had the highest purse value in this auction with more than Rs 38 crore. But their selection was quite surprising. Gujarat’s strategy appeared completely incomprehensible. Where they included Shahrukh Khan for a good sum of Rs 7.4 crore. But it is shocking to see that Rs 10 crore was spent on Australia’s Spencer Johnson. Apart from this, paying Rs 5.8 crore to Umesh Yadav is also a surprising decision. Overall, Gujarat could not find a replacement for Hardik Pandya. The auction for this remained average.
Kolkata Knight Riders – 6.5/10
The 2-time IPL champion Kolkata Knight Riders franchise registered its name in history in this season’s auction. Because they emptied their entire treasury on Australia’s dangerous bowler Mitchell Starc.
KKR made their bowling very good by buying Starc for Rs 24.75 crore. With the arrival of Starc, KKR has now become very strong in terms of bowling in the next season. Apart from this, they got a middle-order batsman like Manish Pandey for just Rs 50 lakh.
By purchasing KS Bharat, they also took the Indian option as a wicketkeeper, but KS Bharat has really bad numbers in his T20 career which may cost KKR. They chose an Indian wicketkeeper option for their team but they must back Rahmanullah Gurbaj as he is a quality player and he will perform for them.
KKR did the most work in the bowling department, where they bought Mujeeb Ur Rahman (again poor choice as they have already Suniel Narine), Chetan Sakariya, Gus Atkinson, and Saqib Hussain. So, the option of an all-rounder has also been given regarding Ramandeep Singh and Sherfan Rutherford. In this way, a good team has been formed. They can get 6.5 marks out of 10.
Lucknow Super Giants – 8/10
Lucknow Supergiants, the team that has been on the IPL platform for the last two seasons, was looking quite balanced even before the auction. This team, captained by KL Rahul, played good moves in the auction, in which they bought Shivam Mavi for Rs 6.4 crore and chose the option of Avesh Khan.
So a dangerous batsman like Ashton Turner was bought for only Rs 1 crore. David Willey was bought at the base price of 2 crores. He bowled very well, but the middle order could have been improved in batting. Which he could not do. But still, it can be given 8 marks out of 10.
Mumbai Indians – 7/10
Before entering the next season of IPL, the Mumbai Indians team, which was facing opposition from its fans, did not enter the auction with a huge amount. Mumbai Indians, who have won the title 5 times, in this auction, made two best bets by buying Gerald Coetzee for Rs 5 crore and Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Madushanka for Rs 4.8 crore. But the story again remained the same where they failed to get their spin bowling in order again. Mumbai has required a quality spin bowler for the last few seasons,
But again they could not complete it. Due to this, they can be given 7 marks out of 10.

Punjab Kings – 7/10
Punjab Kings have also not been able to win even a single title in IPL. To fulfill the dream of Punjab Kings winning the title for the first time, some changes were made in this auction. They bought Harshal Patel here for Rs 11.75 crore, But paying such a huge amount of money to this player was beyond comprehension. At the same time, England’s star all-rounder Chris Woakes was bought for Rs 4.5 crores, which is a good bet.
Apart from this, Punjab made good bets among domestic uncapped players, in which they bought Shashank Singh, Prince Chaudhary, and Ashutosh Sharma, but later spent Rs 8 crore on Riley Rossow.
That was a very bad decision. They needed such a batsman, but this player will not be in the playing 11 of the team in every match. Can give them 7 out of 10.
Royal Challengers Bangalore – 4/10
If any franchise has disappointed the most in this mini-auction of IPL, then that name could be that of Royal Challengers Bangalore. Anyway, the RCB team has not been able to win the title for the last 16 years. This time this team is hoping to take the title, But they spent so much money on some players that they could not play good bets on the rest. They spent Rs 11 crore on West Indies’ Alzarri Joseph.
Rather, he is not such an expensive player. Then Yash Dayal was bought for Rs 5 crore. This young player is also not that effective.
RCB already has Reece Topley on their side and some Indian pacers like Siraj and Vyshak Vijaykumar but still they spent money on buying Joseph and Yash. Rajasthan Royals – 6/10
Just as this mini-auction was normal for RCB, Rajasthan Royals also had to face the same. Although, even before the auction, the Rajasthan Royals team is full of variety. But the kind of bets they have made in the auction can be called a headbeater. They bought West Indies T20 captain Rovman Powell for 7.4 crores. This player has no use in their team Because there are already players like Shimron Hemmeyer and Dhruv Jurrell. They bought Shubham Dubey for 5.8 crores, this can be a good investment. But still, the auction they conducted was average. Can only give them 6 marks out of 10.
Sunrisers Hyderabad- 8.5/10
The Orange Army has been making a lot of changes in its players to become champions for the last many years, But they are not able to achieve success. This mini auction was very good for Sunrisers, who have been at the bottom of the table for the last two seasons. they bought a world-class player like Pat Cummins here for a huge sum of Rs 20.5 crores. But this player has given him 3 options – strike bowler, lower middle order batsman, and captain.
Whereas they got a player like Wanindu Hasaranga for only Rs 1.5 crore. Due to this, his spin bowling got better. The biggest move he played was Travis Head, which he got for Rs 6.8 crores. With the arrival of Head, he got a good option in the opening, and he can also bowl spin. They made a very good team with the rest of the domestic players. To which we can give 8.5 marks out of 10.
