World Cup Qualifiers 2023: When the ODI World Cup will be organized in India from October 5, the West Indies team will not be seen playing in it for the first time. This will be the first time in 48 years of ODI cricket history that the West Indies team will not be seen playing in the ICC ODI World Cup. The West Indies team could not qualify for the World Cup 2023 after losing by 7 wickets to Scotland in the Super Six match of the ICC World Cup Qualifier 2023.

Two-time champion West Indies out of ODI World Cup for the first time

The ODI World Cup was started in 1975 and then the West Indies team became champions for the first time by defeating Australia in the final of this tournament at Lord’s. After this, in its second season also, the West Indies’ glory remained high and once again after defeating England in the finals at Lord’s, this team again became the champion for the second time. But India had broken the dream of becoming the champion of this team for the third time and in 1983, under the captaincy of Kapil Dev, Team India won this title for the first time.

The West Indies, which won the ODI World Cup in 1975 and again in 1979, could never become champions again, but till last season i.e. 2019, they were a part of this tournament. This time i.e. for the ODI World Cup 2023, this team could not even qualify. That is, it was the biggest blow for West Indies cricket. This time the Caribbean team could not even qualify after losing to a team like Scotland in the Super Six.

In the ODI World Cup, the West Indies team was the runner-up in 1983, but after that in 1987 and again in 1992, this team was out of the group stage i.e. first round. In 1996, this team again reached the semi-finals but failed to reach the final. In 1999 and 2003, this team was again out of the first round and this team’s dream of becoming champion for the third time remained incomplete. In 2007, this team was eliminated from the Super 8, while in 2011 and 2015 it reached the quarter-finals. In the last World Cup i.e. 2019, this team once again got eliminated in the group stage itself.

Let us tell you that the West Indies team has also been T20 World Champion twice. But this team could not qualify even for the T20 World Cup 2022. West Indies became T20 World Champions in 2012 and again in 2016. At the same time, this team also won the Champions Trophy title in 2004.
