Australia beat England by two wickets in the first Test of the 2023 Ashes to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Pat Cummins settled the 18-year-old account while playing the captaincy innings with the bat.

Ashes 2023: The Ashes Test series 2023 between England and Australia has started from June 16 2023. The first match of the 5-Test series began on 16 June and ended on 20 June, Australia beat England by 2 wickets in the first Test of the Ashes 2023 to take a 1–0 lead in the 5-match series. On the last day of the match, Pat Cummins, while playing the captaincy innings, settled the 18-year-old score with the host England.

The match took place at the Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham, England. In 2005, the Kangaroos had to chase a similar target on the same ground, but then the Australian team missed by just 2 runs. This time too, Australia’s condition had become a bit bad at the end, but on the basis of Pat Cummins’ captaincy innings of 44 runs, the team was successful in winning the match. Australia has got a target of 281 runs to win this match, apart from Cummins, opener Usman Khawaja contributed 67 runs in the second innings.

In 2005, the target was 282

18 years ago, when the Australian team toured England to play the Ashes series, the hosts had set a target of 282 runs for victory at this very ground. Due to the deadly bowling of Andrew Flintoff, the Kangaroo team missed winning this match by just 2 runs. Flintoff had taken a total of 4 wickets in that match. In this match too, the lower order showed the team the way to victory by batting well, but they could not cross the target. Shane Warne scored 42 and Brett Lee scored 43 runs.

Captain Pat Cummins settled the account

Now Pat Cummins has settled this account while playing the captaincy innings. Batting first in the match, England declared their innings at 393 runs. Perhaps this fearless decision became the reason for their defeat. Actually, Joe Root was playing by scoring a century at that time and the English team had 2 wickets left. If England had not declared their innings on the first day, they would have had a chance to increase their score further.

So. In front of this score of England, Australia scored 386 runs in their innings on the basis of Usman Khawaja’s century and they were just 7 runs behind England’s 393 runs.

The English team was all out for 273 runs in their second innings and thus the visitors got a target of 281 runs. This target was easy in Modern Day cricket, but after the first session was rained on the last day, everything was in favour of England. Despite this, Australia did a great job by winning this match.
