The former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir believes that Indian selectors should not hassle to include Rinku Singh for the upcoming T20 WC 2024. Gambhir thinks 21-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal should be part of this upcoming tournament.
Not Rinku Singh but Yashasvi Jaiswal should get a chance
Providing his opinion, Gautam Gambhir said that Rinku Singh should prove himself in domestic cricket before playing international cricket. Let us tell you that Rinku Singh performed extremely well in this season of IPL i.e. IPL 2023 while playing for Kolkata Knight Riders.
In IPL 2023, he won a match for his team by hitting five consecutive sixes against Gujarat Titans. And this inning got settled in everyone’s mind. The 25-year-old batsman scored the most runs for KKR this season.
He scored 474 runs with a strike rate of 149.53 and an average of 59.25. He also had four half-centuries.
Gambhir while talking to News18 said that Rinku Singh’s story is inspiring and he has performed well too, But don’t pick a player after just one season. He further said that let Rinku score runs in the domestic season and then return to the IPL and let him score runs. And if he continues to perform well then you can think of including him in the Indian team.
Don’t pick any players on the basis of one good IPL season
While talking about Yashasvi Jaiswal, Gambhir praised him and said that he has been consistently good in domestic cricket and he is selected on the basis of merit. He said that the issue in India is that we take seriously the performance done in two months in IPL and whoever does well, he is included in the Indian team. Yashasvi has scored double centuries in both first-class and ODIs in domestic cricket. Significantly, Yashasvi scored 625 runs in 14 matches played in IPL 2023 with the help of a century in which he had an average of 48.08 while the strike rate was 163.61.
