Will Virender Sehwag be named Team India's Chief Selector? Money is becoming a hindrance
According to sources, Virender Sehwag has emerged as a top candidate to become the next national team chief selector.

The post of Team India’s Chief Selector (BCCI Chief Selector) is vacant from February 2023. After the resignation of Chetan Sharma, the BCCI has not yet been able to appoint him to this post. Former chief selector Chetan Sharma resigned from the post after his sting operation went viral. Now according to a report, Virender Sehwag has emerged as a leading candidate to become the next chief selector of the national team.

According to a media report, the former star cricketer has been approached by the cricket board, but a major hurdle in Sehwag’s induction into the board is the salary offered by the BCCI. However, reports also suggest that Sehwag is not interested in the role as the selector’s salary is too low for his liking. Significantly, the current selectors get up to one crore for the chairman.

As per the BCCI constitution, the next chairman of the selection committee will be from the North Zone as Chetan was from the same zone. The leader of the selection panel is paid Rs 1 crore each year, while the other members are given Rs 90 lakh.

A BCCI insider told PTI that Sehwag was asked to apply for the vacant head coach role before Anil Kumble. According to a BCCI executive, Sehwag is the only viable candidate from the North Zone.

A BCCI official told PTI on the condition of anonymity, “At the time of COA, Viru was asked to apply for the job of head coach and then it became Anil Kumble. It is unlikely that he will apply himself and the salary package is also not something that suits his stature but if we talk about stature then only he is the right option from North Zone.”

Virender Sehwag last played international cricket in 2013 but remains active with his opinion on Indian cricket. Chetan Sharma was sacked by the BCCI following a sting operation by the news media. He was found to have disclosed confidential information relating to players including former captain Virat Kohli and the head coach. Former cricketer Shiv Sundar Das replaced Chetan as the selector from North Zone and chairman of the selection panel.
