IND vs AFG: The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee may face a dilemma while choosing the team for the T20 series against Afghanistan as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli express their desire to play in the T20 World Cup 2024 in June. Both Rohit and Kohli have not played in the shortest format for India after the T20 World Cup semi-final against England in November 2022.
Two national selectors, Shivsunder Das and Salil Ankola, are currently in South Africa while Agarkar will also reach there during the second Test match.
There is every possibility that Agarkar and his teammates will talk to head coach Rahul Dravid, Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma, and star batsman Kohli during this time, and after that, the team will be selected for the series against Afghanistan.
The performance of around 30 players will be monitored in the Indian Premier League (IPL) before the T20 World Cup to be held in West Indies and America.
It remains to be seen whether Agarkar and his colleagues select Rohit and Kohli for the series to be held in Mohali from January 11 or whether their form and fitness will be monitored during the IPL itself. Both these legendary players have made it clear that they would love to be a part of the T20 World Cup.
India has to play a Test series against England from January 25 and hence Rohit and Kohli are unlikely to be selected for the T20 series against Afghanistan. Indian Cricket Board sources told PTI on condition of anonymity, “Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya are not fit.
Nothing can be anticipated from the series against Afghanistan. Any decision will be taken based on the first month’s performance in the IPL.
